LA VILLE DE RAON L'ETAPE

THE CITY OF RAON L'ETAPE

|
Faisant partie de la communauté de communes de la Vallée de La Plaine, forte de plus de 8700 habitants, la ville de Raon l'Etape trouve ses origines avant le 12e siècle.
Etymologie : "Raon" = confluent et "l'Etape" = le péage.
Ici, s'arrête le plateau lorrain et commencent les Vosges dans un très brusque changement de décor : les montagnes s'élèvent et les sapins apparaissent, ainsi, on la nomme également "Porte des Vosges". Cette bourgade naît au confluent de la Meurthe et de la Plaine.
Prospère aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles grâce aux exploitations forestières, des trains entiers de bois débité étaient flottés sur la Plaine jusqu'à Raon l'Etape, puis transportés vers Metz et Thionville, toujours par voie fluviale. La Plaine était également exploitée pour son "eau vive", énergie hydraulique qui alimentait les scieries de la vallée.
En 1810, suite à un incendie, la municipalité met en place un système de réserves d'eau grâce à des canaux, et installe des fontaines qui donnent un charme certain à la ville. Quantité de bâtiments publics et d'habitations sont construites en grès rosé, ce qui donne à la cité un caractère particulier.
Au début du XXe siècle, les nouvelles formes de transport finiront par supplanter le flottage du bois et les industries textiles cesseront leur activité ... Raon l'Etape aura bien du mal à s'en relever d'autant qu'en 1914 et 1944, elle sera pillée.
Aujourd'hui, la vocation de Raon l'Étape est industrielle et tertiaire.
Le tissu économique repose sur d'importantes entreprises : papeteries, carrière, plastiques, télécommunications ... et table à l'avenir sur le tourisme pour assurer son développement.

Le menhir, situé au lieu dit "Pierre Borne", un monolithe de granit rose de 3 mètres de haut qui est classé Monument historique depuis 1924.

L'Hôtel de ville, élevé en 1733, en grès rose avec ses arcades et son horloge.

12 fontaines du XIXe siècle installées de 1863 à 1893. Elles sont les reproductions en bronze de statues célèbres du Louvre.

Le théâtre municipal (anciennement la halle au blé) construit à l'origine en 1827 et reconstruit en 1923, restauré en 2002, abrite aussi une grande salle d'exposition, la salle Emile Gallé. Cette bâtisse est faite essentiellement de grès rose.

L'église Saint-Luc baptisée "la petite Madeleine" en raison de sa façade à colonnade. Son clocher se trouve au dessus du choeur.
